What is a Sack Truck?

A sack truck is sometimes referred to as a hand truck or trolley. It is essentially a manual device in the shape of an L used to move boxes, or bags, or sacks for example. It has handles at one end vertically upwards which are used to steer the truck and wheels at the bottom to easily maneuver the device.

How do you use a sack truck?

The idea is to lift on the truck the heavy objects which can be boxes, bags, or sacks for example, and then tilt back the handles so the weight is put on the handles. From here the truck can be steered with the wheel. Sometimes initially tilting the truck back requires using a bit of strength and force depending on how heave the load is. Once you have transported the truck and the load to where you need them to be you can tilt forwards the truck so it rests on the floor allowing you to take off the load.

If working on an industrial site or in a shop or anywhere in a place of employment where you are required to use a sack truck they should provide proper training on how to use all equipment including a sack truck. If a sack truck or any kind of equipment is used incorrectly it can cause injuries.

What are sack trucks used for?

They are ultimately used to move heavy loads more easily. As it is manual and not mechanical it is not usually of great distance that the loads need to be transported but for example across the building site, or across the shop floor, or around the storage room. This can include any kind of products or merchandise such as food and drink, clothing, office equipment and so on.

Some sack trucks come with stair climber wheels, they are designed slightly differently but allow the operator to easily go up and downstairs with the heavy loads.
